At this juncture, let's conduct a perception check to see where we are in our philosophic journey. In the preceding pages we have examined the skills required to develop a personal philosophy. This investigation has been "hands on" in the sense that you have conducted your own analysis, reached your own conclusions and developed your own philosophic maturity. Already you have been introduced to a basic premise of this book: philosophy is not yours until you experience it. Until you know it, feel it and do it, it is someone else's world view. You may appropriate ideas from others to help form your philosophy, but it only becomes yours when you live it. The exercises were designed to facilitate this "lived philosophy" approach to the basic skills of the philosophic process. In the next section, we will proceed beyond the question of how philosophy is applied to introduce the element of movement. We will see how the skills associated with the world of ideas are critical to success in our movement endeavors. This will lead to the construction of your own movement philosophy. Finally we will take an introductory look at the unique understandings to be gained through philosophy that are so critical to the growth of our field of study, of our professions and ultimately, of you!
